Invocation for Halal, Blessed, and Abundant Sustenance

In daily life, every Muslim seeks to meet their needs while adhering to the boundaries set by Allah's laws.

This profound and comprehensive invocation, attributed to our pious predecessors, teaches us how to ask Allah for blessed and purified sustenance aligned with Islamic values.

Here is an in-depth explanation of this invocation that can transform how we view our means of livelihood.

The Invocation Text

In English: O Allah, if my sustenance is in the heavens, send it down. If it is in the earth, bring it forth. If it is unlawful, purify it. If it is distant, bring it closer. If it is little, increase it. If it is abundant, bless it for us, O Allah. O Allah, if it does not yet exist, create it. O Allah, grant me the best of what You grant Your righteous servants.

In Transliteration: Allâhumma in kâna rizqî fî as-samâ’i fa-anzilhu, wa in kâna fî al-arḍi fa-akhrijhu, wa in kâna ḥarâman fa-ṭahhirhu, wa in kâna ba‘îdan fa-qarribhu, wa in kâna qalîlan fa-kaththirhu, wa in kâna kathîran fa-bârik lanâ fîhi. Allâhumma wa in kâna ma‘dûman fa-kawwinnahu. Allâhumma âtinî min khayri mâ tu’tî bihi ‘ibâdaka aṣ-ṣâliḥîn.

A Supplication Rich in Spiritual Depth

This invocation is filled with wisdom, teaching us essential aspects of faith and our relationship with Allah.

  1. Recognizing Allah's Sovereignty By asking Allah for sustenance (rizq), we affirm that all we possess or desire comes from Him alone. Whether hidden in the heavens, buried in the earth, or inaccessible for some reason, Allah is the only One capable of providing for us.
  2. The Importance of Purity in Sustenance (Rizq) This invocation emphasizes the necessity of halal (lawful) sustenance. If our means are unlawful, we ask Allah to purify them. This highlights the priority a Muslim must give to the legality of their income and possessions.
  3. Blessings Beyond Abundance Having wealth is not enough. What matters is the barakah (blessing) Allah places in it. A small amount with blessings can achieve much more than great wealth devoid of barakah.
  4. Affirmation That Sustenance (Rizq) Comes from Allah The invocation acknowledges that sometimes what we desire does not yet exist. In such cases, we ask Allah to create it for us, reflecting the belief that even the impossible is within Allah's power.

Foundations in the Quran and Sunnah

This invocation resonates with many Quranic verses and hadiths:

  • Quran 11:6 "There is no creature on earth except that its sustenance is upon Allah." This verse reminds us that Allah is the Provider for all creation, and turning to Him suffices for our needs.
  • Hadith in Sahih Muslim The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah is pure and accepts only that which is pure." This underscores the importance of lawful sustenance, as highlighted in the invocation.
  • Quran 2:172 "O you who have believed, eat from the lawful things We have provided for you." This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking lawful and blessed sustenance.

Why Teach This Invocation?

This invocation transcends material pursuits, instilling fundamental values such as:

  • Trust in Allah (Tawakkul): It teaches us to entrust our needs and desires to Allah while putting in the necessary effort.
  • Gratitude: By asking for barakah, we acknowledge that our efforts alone are insufficient.
  • Perseverance: When our sustenance feels distant or difficult to attain, this invocation encourages persistence while turning to Allah.

How to Incorporate This Invocation into Daily Life

  1. In Daily Prayers: Recite this invocation after obligatory prayers or during moments when supplications are accepted (e.g., between the adhan and iqama).
  2. As a Family Practice: Teach this invocation to your children to instill Islamic values from a young age.
  3. During Difficult Times: When facing financial challenges or seeking opportunities, make this invocation a daily habit.

Conclusion

The invocation for blessed sustenance (rizq) is a powerful tool for believers.

It connects us to Allah while reminding us of the importance of ethics, purity, and barakah in everything we possess. By integrating this supplication into our lives, we strengthen our faith and dependence on Allah, the Ultimate Provider.

May everyone benefit from this invocation and find peace in the satisfaction of Allah's provisions
