Introduction to Long Vowels

In this fourth lesson of the Arabic alphabet course, we will see that the Arabic language includes long vowels. Previously, we studied the short vowels and tanween.

The long vowels represent the following sounds:

ALIF AL-MADD: long “A” sound

WAW AL-MADD: long “OU” sound

YA AL-MADD: long “I” sound

Long vowels are essentially short vowels whose sound is prolonged during pronunciation. They are formed from three letters: alif, waw, and ya.

Note: The vowels ي و ا share the same writing properties (beginning, middle, end; connected or not) as the letters ي و أ.
