What is the evil eye in Islam?<\/h2>

The evil eye refers to harm that may affect a person through an envious, jealous or admiring gaze when it is not accompanied by remembrance of Allah and asking Him for blessing. In Islam, the believer should not fall into excessive fear, but should take the means of protection taught by the religion.<\/p>

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, taught that the evil eye is real. This does not mean that a Muslim should live in anxiety, but rather that they should protect themselves through authentic supplications, Quran recitation and trust in Allah.<\/p>

Transliteration:<\/strong> Bismillahi alladhi la yadurru ma\u2018a ismihi shay\u2019un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama\u2019i wa huwa as-sami\u2018u al-\u2018alim.<\/p>

Translation:<\/strong> In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing can cause harm on earth or in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.<\/p>

This supplication is a general formula of protection. It reminds the believer to seek refuge in Allah from every visible and invisible harm.<\/p>

Dua against the evil eye in transliteration<\/h2>

For those who cannot yet read Arabic, transliteration can help at the beginning. Here is a simple supplication to memorize:<\/p>

A\u2018udhu bi kalimati-llahi at-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah wa min kulli \u2018aynin lammah.<\/strong><\/p>

Translation:<\/strong> I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every harmful creature and every evil eye.<\/p>

Transliteration is useful for beginners, but learning to read Arabic gradually is better for preserving the correct pronunciation of supplications.<\/p>

English translation of the dua against the evil eye<\/h2>

The general meaning of this dua is a request for protection from Allah. The believer recognizes that only Allah truly protects against the evil eye, jealousy, invisible harm and the difficulties that may affect a person.<\/p>

In English, you may also say:<\/p>

O Allah, protect me, my family, my children, my health and my possessions from the evil eye, jealousy and every visible or hidden harm.<\/em><\/p>

Translation:<\/strong> O Allah, protect me from every evil eye, every jealousy and every harm.<\/p>

This supplication may be recited for oneself, one\u2019s children, one\u2019s family or someone one wishes to protect.<\/p>

What should you say when you admire someone or something?<\/h2>

When a Muslim sees something pleasing in themselves or in another person, they should ask Allah to bless it in order to avoid any harm related to the gaze or excessive admiration.<\/p>

They may say:<\/p>

Allahumma barik<\/strong><\/p>

Translation:<\/strong> O Allah, bless it.<\/p>

They may also say:<\/p>

Ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah<\/strong><\/p>

Translation:<\/strong> What Allah has willed. There is no power except with Allah.<\/p>

These phrases remind the believer that every success, beauty, health and provision comes from Allah.<\/p>

Surahs and verses against the evil eye<\/h2>

In addition to supplications, a Muslim may seek protection through the recitation of the Quran. The surahs most often recited for protection against the evil eye include:<\/p>
