Introduction to the Active Participle اِسْمُ الفاعِلِ
In Arabic, the noun designating the one who performs an action (the subject) is called اِسْمُ الفاعِلِ. It is formed by adding an alif ا after the first root letter of the verb فَعَلَ. The middle letter receives a kasrah, and the final letter takes a tanwīn. The pattern of the active participle is therefore فَاعِلٌ.
Examples:
سَجَدَ / سَاجِدٌ
The one who prostrates
حَمِدَ / حَامِدٌ
The one who praises
كَفَرَ / كَافِرٌ
The disbeliever

قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ
Say: “O you disbelievers!” (109:1)
وَلَا أَنَا عَابِدٌ مَّا عَبَدتُّمْ
And I am not a worshipper of what you worship. (109:4)
