The adhkār recited before sleep hold a central place in a Muslim’s spiritual routine. The Prophet ﷺ never went to bed without specific invocations,
transmitted through authentic narrations, so that the believer entrusts their soul to Allah—Exalted is He—seeks His protection, and seals the day with worship.
These adhkār are a nightly spiritual shield: protection from Shayṭān, disturbing dreams, and unseen trials—while turning sleep itself into an act of devotion.

Even before reciting supplications, the Prophet ﷺ used to perform certain actions that prepare the believer—body and heart—for rest upon guidance.
Al-Barā’ ibn ʿĀzib reported that the Prophet ﷺ said to him:
“When you go to bed, perform ablution as you would for prayer, then lie down on your right side…”

Sleeping in a state of purity upon the Sunnah, and being spiritually ready to meet Allah if the soul is taken during the night.
بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Bismika Allāhumma amūtu wa aḥyā
In Your Name, O Allah, I die and I live.
Ḥudhayfa ibn al-Yamān reported:
“When the Prophet ﷺ went to bed, he would say: ‘Bismika Allāhumma amūtu wa aḥyā.’”

Placing one’s life and death in Allah’s Hands—Exalted is He—and transforming sleep into worship.
بِاسْمِكَ رَبِّي وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ إِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا تَحْفَظُ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ
Bismika rabbī waḍaʿtu janbī, wa bika arfaʿuh, in amsakta nafsī farḥamhā,
wa in arsaltahā faḥfaẓhā, bimā taḥfaẓu bihī ʿibādaka ṣ-ṣāliḥīn.
In Your Name, my Lord, I lie down, and by You I rise. If You take my soul, then have mercy on it;
and if You return it, then protect it in the way You protect Your righteous servants.
Al-Barā’ ibn ʿĀzib reported that the Prophet ﷺ taught him this supplication and instructed him to say it when going to bed — al-Bukhārī (247), Muslim (2710).
Complete surrender of the soul to Allah—Exalted is He—before sleep.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَفَانِي وَآوَانِي الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي وَسَقَانِي الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي مَنَّ عَلَيَّ وَأَفْضَلَ
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِعِزَّتِكَ أَنْ تُنَجِّيَنِي مِنَ النَّارِ
Al-ḥamdu liLlāhi alladhī kafānī wa āwānī, al-ḥamdu liLlāhi alladhī aṭʿamanī wa saqānī,
al-ḥamdu liLlāhi alladhī manna ʿalayya wa afḍal, Allāhumma innī asʾaluka bi-ʿizzatika an tunajjiyanī mina n-nār.
Praise be to Allah who sufficed me and sheltered me, who fed me and gave me drink, who bestowed His favors upon me and increased me.
O Allah, by Your might, save me from the Fire.
Reported by Abū Dāwūd (5045), authenticated by al-Albānī.
Gratitude for Allah’s blessings—Exalted is He—and a sincere plea for protection from Hellfire.
اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ
Allāhumma qinī ʿadhābaka yawma tabʿathu ʿibādak.
O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.
Reported by Abū Dāwūd (5045), authenticated.

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ، وَرَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ،
رَبَّنَا وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ،
فَالِقَ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَى،
وَمُنْزِلَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالإِنْجِيلِ وَالْقُرْآنِ،
أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ أَنْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهِ،
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الأَوَّلُ فَلَيْسَ قَبْلَكَ شَيْءٌ،
وَأَنْتَ الآخِرُ فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَكَ شَيْءٌ،
وَأَنْتَ الظَّاهِرُ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَكَ شَيْءٌ،
وَأَنْتَ الْبَاطِنُ فَلَيْسَ دُونَكَ شَيْءٌ،
اقْضِ عَنَّا الدَّيْنَ، وَأَغْنِنَا مِنَ الْفَقْرِ.
Allāhumma rabba s-samāwāti s-sabʿ, wa rabba l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīm, rabbanā wa rabba kulli shay’,fāliqa l-ḥabbi wa n-nawā,
wa munzila t-tawrāti wa l-injīli wa l-qur’ān, aʿūdhu bika min sharri kulli shay’in anta ākhidhun bi-nāṣiyatih,
Allāhumma anta l-awwalu fa-laysa qablaka shay’, wa anta l-ākhiru fa-laysa baʿdaka shay’,
wa anta ẓ-ẓāhiru fa-laysa fawqaka shay’, wa anta l-bāṭinu fa-laysa dūnaka shay’,
iqḍi ʿannā d-dayn, wa aghninā mina l-faqr.
O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things,
Splitter of the grain and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur’an—
I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything whose forelock You hold.
O Allah, You are the First—nothing existed before You; You are the Last—nothing will exist after You;
You are the Most High—nothing is above You; You are the Most Near (Hidden)—nothing is beneath You.
Relieve us of debt and enrich us so that we are protected from poverty.
Abū Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to say, when he went to bed:
“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens…” (then he mentioned this supplication) “…relieve us of debt and enrich us so that we are protected from poverty.”
Reported by Muslim (2713).
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ
وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ
Lā ilāha illā Llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu l-mulku wa lahu l-ḥamd, wa Huwa ʿalā kulli shay’in qadīr.
Subḥāna Llāh, wa l-ḥamdu liLlāh, wa lā ilāha illā Llāh, wa Llāhu akbar. Wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā biLlāh.
There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belong dominion and praise, and He is capable of all things.
Glory be to Allah. Praise be to Allah. There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. Allah is the Greatest.
There is no power nor strength except through Allah.
ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever, before sleeping, says:
Lā ilāha illā Llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu l-mulku wa lahu l-ḥamd wa Huwa ʿalā kulli shay’in qadīr.
Subḥāna Llāh, wa l-ḥamdu liLlāh, wa lā ilāha illā Llāh, wa Llāhu akbar,
wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā biLlāh,
his sins will be forgiven—even if they are as many as the foam of the sea.”

عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ

أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي
وَمِنْ شَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ
Allāhumma fāṭira s-samāwāti wa l-arḍ, ʿālima l-ghaybi wa sh-shahādah, rabba kulli shay’in wa malīkah,
ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā anta, aʿūdhu bika min sharri nafsī, wa min sharri sh-shayṭāni wa shirkih.
O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Lord and Sovereign of all things—
I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except You.
I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own soul and from the evil of Shayṭān and his temptations.
Abū Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“When one of you goes to bed, let him say:
Allāhumma fāṭira s-samāwāti wa l-arḍ…” (then he mentioned this supplication).

اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ نَفْسِي إِلَيْكَ وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ
وَوَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ
وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ
رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ
لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ
آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ
وَبِنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ
Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayk, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayk, wa alja’tu ẓahrī ilayk,
raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, lā malja’a wa lā manjā minka illā ilayk, āmantu bi-kitābika lladhī anzalt,
wa bi-nabiyyika lladhī arsalt.
O Allah, I surrender myself to You, I entrust my affairs to You, I turn my face toward You, and I seek refuge in You—
in hope and in fear. There is no refuge and no escape from You except with You.
I believe in Your Book which You revealed, and in Your Prophet whom You sent.
Al-Barā’ ibn ʿĀzib reported that the Prophet ﷺ said to him:
“When you go to bed, say: Allāhumma aslamtu nafsī ilayk…
If you die during the night, you will die upon faith.”

ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib reported:
“Fāṭimah complained about the hardship of housework. She went to the Prophet ﷺ to ask for a servant, but she did not find him.
When he came, he said:
‘Shall I not guide you to something better for you than a servant?
When you go to bed, say:
Subḥānallāh thirty-three times,
al-ḥamdu liLlāh thirty-three times,
and Allāhu akbar thirty-four times.
That is better for you than a servant.’”

The adhkār before sleeping are among the most consistent practices of the Prophet ﷺ. They allow the believer to entrust their soul to Allah,
seek His protection, and end the day in surrender, tawakkul, and serenity.
Whoever preserves these invocations falls asleep in remembrance, gratitude, and trust in Allah—Exalted is He.
Sleep then becomes worship, and the night becomes a time of protection and mercy.
Making these adhkār part of one’s daily routine—even if only a few, but with steadiness—is a means of inner peace,
protection from Shayṭān, and true spiritual success.
