Seeking Allah’s forgiveness is one of the most important acts of worship in the life of a believer. In Islam, sincere repentance allows a person to return to Allah, purify the heart and hope for His mercy. Whether you are looking for a dua for forgiveness from Allah, a dua for repentance or a short istighfar supplication, the key is to turn to Allah with sincerity, regret and humility.

Here is a short dua for forgiveness from Allah:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ

Transliteration: Rabbi ghfir li wa tub ‘alayya innaka anta at-Tawwab ar-Rahim.

Translation: My Lord, forgive me and accept my repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful.

Why should Muslims seek Allah’s forgiveness?

Islam teaches that Allah’s forgiveness is open to everyone who sincerely repents, regrets their sins and seeks His mercy. Human beings are naturally prone to mistakes, but Allah loves those who return to Him with humility.

The Quran reminds believers many times of the importance of asking Allah for forgiveness. Allah says in Surah An-Nisa:

“And ask forgiveness of Allah. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.”

This act of asking forgiveness is known as istighfar. It is not only a phrase repeated by the tongue. It should come from the heart and be accompanied by a sincere return to Allah.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would seek Allah’s forgiveness frequently, even though he was the best of creation. This shows that istighfar is an essential act of worship for every Muslim, whether after a sin or as a daily way to strengthen one’s relationship with Allah.

Dua for forgiveness from Allah in Arabic

One of the most well-known supplications for seeking forgiveness is Sayyid al-Istighfar, often described as one of the greatest forms of repentance.

Translation: O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no deity worthy of worship except You. You created me and I am Your servant. I remain upon my covenant and promise to You as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me and I acknowledge my sins. Forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.

Dua for repentance in transliteration

For those who cannot yet read Arabic, transliteration can help them begin learning the dua for repentance. A simple and powerful phrase to memorize is:

Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh

Translation: I seek forgiveness from Allah and I repent to Him.

This short invocation can be repeated every day, after prayer, during moments of reflection or whenever a person feels the need to return sincerely to Allah.

Dua of Prophet Adam for forgiveness

The Quran also mentions the supplication of Prophet Adam when he sought forgiveness from Allah. This dua expresses recognition of one’s mistake, humility and hope in divine mercy.

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

Transliteration: Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakunanna mina al-khasirin.

Translation: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.

Short dua to ask Allah for forgiveness

There are also very short formulas that Muslims can repeat throughout the day. The simplest one is:

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ

Transliteration: Astaghfirullah.

Translation: I seek forgiveness from Allah.

This short form of istighfar is easy to memorize. It can be repeated after a mistake, after prayer, during the day or in moments of solitude.

Dua for hope in Allah’s mercy

Asking Allah for forgiveness also means recognizing human weakness and one’s constant need for the help of the Lord.

Translation: O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help. Set right all of my affairs and do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye.

What are the conditions of sincere repentance in Islam?

Sincere repentance, known as tawbah, is not limited to saying a dua. It must be accompanied by a real inner change.

Scholars generally mention several essential conditions:

  • feeling sincere regret for the sin committed;
  • leaving the sin immediately;
  • making a firm decision not to return to it;
  • repairing the harm if the sin involved another person;
  • asking Allah for forgiveness with humility and sincerity.

A dua for repentance should therefore come with a sincere heart, true regret and a genuine desire to improve.

When should you recite a dua for forgiveness?

A believer may ask Allah for forgiveness at any time. However, some moments are especially suitable for istighfar:

  • after the obligatory prayers;
  • during the night, especially before dawn;
  • after committing a sin;
  • when feeling sadness, guilt or spiritual weakness;
  • during moments of reflection and solitude;
  • every day, even without a specific sin, to purify the heart.

Repeating Astaghfirullah regularly helps the believer remain aware of human weakness and strengthens the connection with Allah.

Mistakes to avoid when asking Allah for forgiveness

For repentance to be sincere, it is important to avoid certain mistakes:

  • reciting the dua without reflecting on its meaning;
  • continuing the sin deliberately while claiming to repent;
  • despairing of Allah’s mercy;
  • delaying repentance again and again;
  • forgetting to repair the harm caused to others.

Sincere repentance is based on humility. The believer acknowledges their mistakes, but never loses hope in Allah’s mercy.

The power of Allah’s forgiveness

Allah’s forgiveness is immense. No matter how serious a person’s sins may be, the door of repentance remains open as long as they return sincerely to their Lord.

Seeking forgiveness purifies the soul, brings peace to the heart and strengthens one’s relationship with Allah. This is why istighfar should be part of the daily life of every Muslim.
