How to Pray Qiyam Al-Layl?

Qiyam Al-Layl is a non-obligatory prayer that can be performed after the Isha prayer and before the Fajr prayer. It consists of at least two Rak‘ahs and can be extended as desired. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would often pray eight Rak‘ahs, followed by Witr prayer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to performing Qiyam Al-Layl:

  • Make the Intention (Niyyah): As with all acts of worship, sincerity is key. Before starting, one should make the intention to perform Qiyam Al-Layl for the sake of Allah.
  • Begin with Takbir: Start the prayer by raising your hands and saying "Allahu Akbar."
  • Recite Surah Al-Fatihah: This is followed by another Surah from the Quran.
  • Complete the Ruk‘u and Sujood: Bow and prostrate with humility and devotion.
  • Repeat for Additional Rak‘ahs: Continue as per your capacity.
  • Conclude with Witr Prayer: It is recommended to finish Qiyam Al-Layl with Witr, which can be one, three, or more Rak‘ahs.

Virtues of Qiyam Al-Layl:

The rewards of Qiyam Al-Layl are immense, and numerous hadiths emphasize its importance:

  • Closeness to Allah: The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, "The closest that a servant comes to his Lord is during the last third of the night." (Sahih Muslim)
  • Forgiveness of Sins: Engaging in night prayer is a means of expiation for sins, as mentioned in the Quran (Surah Al-Isra, 17:79).
  • A Sign of True Believers: Allah praises those who wake up at night to worship Him in Surah Al-Furqan (25:64).
  • Spiritual Elevation: It strengthens faith, brings tranquility, and increases one's patience and reliance on Allah.

Best Time for Qiyam Al-Layl:

The night prayer can be performed anytime after Isha until Fajr. However, the last third of the night is considered the most virtuous time, as Allah descends to the lowest heaven and answers the supplications of His servants. Calculating the last third is simple: divide the time between Isha and Fajr into three parts and pray in the final segment.
