How Reciting Qur'an During Umrah Amplifies Barakah

We all know Ihram as pilgrims’ clothing during the Hajj or Umrah. But it is essential to remember that it is more than just a piece of clothing. Ihram is a ritualistic state that demands the purity of both body and soul. Ihram has immense significance in Islamic traditions as this clothing and state symbolise purity. Understanding the rituals of Ihram is a crucial step in preparing for the pilgrimage to ensure that you are performing your Hajj or Umrah perfectly.

You might have seen many of your fellow UK Muslims and believers from around the globe dressed in white cloth and performing Tawaf around the Holy Kaaba. If you want to be one of them this year, it is time to book Umrah packages from London and start planning your pilgrimage. Start by learning and understanding the rituals of Umrah, including Ihram and the rules that come with this state. Here is a complete guide on Ihram.

What is Ihram and its Significance?

Derived from the Arabic word “haram”, Ihram means to make it sacred or to forbid. Pilgrims must enter the state of Ihram at one of the Miqat sites before arriving at the Grand Mosque for Hajj or Umrah. It is mandatory for all pilgrims and is regarded as both pilgrimages’ first and essential ritual. To enter this state, one must clean the body thoroughly through ghusl (ritual purification), wear the prescribed attire—two white unstitched clothes for men and modest clothing for women, declare the intention (niyyah) to perform the pilgrimage, and commit to following all the rules of this sacred state.

The purpose of Ihram is not just about wearing specific clothing, but about entering a spiritual condition of purity, peace, and self-control. While in Ihram, certain actions become forbidden, such as cutting hair or nails, using perfume, engaging in marital relations, hunting, or arguing. These restrictions are meant to help the pilgrim detach from worldly concerns, focus on spiritual growth, and maintain inner and outer purity. It is a time for reflection, prayer, and sincere devotion. The simplicity of the Ihram clothing also reflects the humility and equality of all believers before Allah, reinforcing the idea that every Muslim is part of a unified and sacred brotherhood.

Hajj is during well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering Ihram], there is to be for him no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do – Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:197)

This verse outlines the moral and behavioral obligations during Ihram, highlighting the need for self-control, sincerity, and spiritual focus once the sacred state is assumed.

Significance of the State of Ihram

Ihram holds deep spiritual and symbolic significance in Islam. It represents peace, harmony, and unity among Muslims across the globe. When pilgrims enter the state of Ihram during Hajj or Umrah, they wear two simple white unstitched garments (for men), while women wear modest clothing that meets Islamic guidelines. This uniform appearance removes all signs of social status, wealth, or nationality. Whether someone is a ruler or a servant, all stand equal before Allah, dressed the same, united in purpose and devotion. This powerful act demonstrates the essence of equality and brotherhood in the Muslim Ummah, reminding believers that in the sight of Allah, all are the same.

“مَن حَجَّ لِلَّهِ، فَلَمْ يَرْفُثْ، وَلَمْ يَفْسُقْ، رَجَعَ كَيَوْمِ وَلَدَتْهُ أُمُّهُ”

Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of Allah and does not engage in sexual relations, commit sin, or dispute unjustly during Hajj will return [free from sin] as the day his mother gave birth to him.
(Narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim)

This Hadith powerfully emphasizes the reward of spiritual rebirth and purification for those who uphold the sanctity of Ihram and maintain righteous behavior throughout the pilgrimage.

Moreover, the white garments resemble the shroud used in Islamic funerals, symbolising death and resurrection. It is a reminder that life is temporary and that every soul will ultimately return to its Creator. The simplicity and humility of Ihram inspire Muslims to reflect on their mortality and to live righteously. It encourages believers to abandon pride, arrogance, and worldly distractions, as death does not discriminate—rich or poor, strong or weak, all return to the same earth.

Most importantly, Ihram represents submission to Allah’s will. Entering this sacred state marks the beginning of a spiritual journey—a journey not just to the holy sites, but toward self-purification and renewal. Hajj and Umrah are golden opportunities to seek forgiveness, shed past sins, and return with a clean heart and renewed faith. In this way, Ihram becomes more than just clothing—it symbolizes transformation, humility, and complete devotion to Allah. It reminds Muslims of their purpose in life: to worship, to serve, and to prepare for the Hereafter with sincerity and devotion.

Basics of the Ihram Clothing

As mentioned, Ihram is both a physical and spiritual state; you must wear the prescribed clothing to assume it. Once you have booked your Umrah Packages, you must know that you must enter the state of Ihram before crossing one of the miqat sites. It depends on which direction you are coming from to Saudi Arabia. Some people even enter the state of Ihram before boarding the plane.

Even though the spiritual state of Ihram is the same for both men and women, there are prominent differences in Ihram clothing and some rules. Let’s talk about the basics of Ihram clothing for both men and women.

  • Ihram for Men

It consists of two pieces of plain white unstitched clothing. One piece covers the waist below, while the other covers the torso and is draped over one shoulder. Rida’s upper garment is draped over the left shoulder while the right shoulder is exposed, especially during Tawaf. The lower garment, called the Izar, covers the navel to the ankles. Pilgrims must securely wrap it around their waist. Men must not wear sewn clothing like socks, underwear, or anything else.

  • Ihram for Women

There is no specific Ihram garment for women. Women’s Ihram clothing must follow the basic requirements of the Islamic dress code. The clothes must be loose-fitted, and neutral colours are preferred. Unlike men, women can wear socks, shoes, and sewn clothing. Women must not cover their faces.

Rules of Ihram Clothing

Once you have entered the state of Ihram, you must follow the Ihram rules. Here is a list of the regulations for wearing Ihram clothing.

  • Wearing stitched clothing by men is prohibited.
  • A man must not cover his head and a woman her face.
  • You must not cut your nails and hair while in the state of Ihram.
  • Make sure not to wear sandals or socks that cover your ankles.
  • You must not use any perfume or scented products.
  • Use of cosmetics is prohibited.
  • You must not kill an animal unless it is a threat to your life.
  • You must not have sexual relations while in the state of Ihram.

Summing Up

Understanding the rituals of Ihram is very important before you embark on your spiritual retreat. It tells you about the state you must be in while performing your Hajj or Umrah and teaches you numerous life lessons of unity, humility, and equality. If your heart yearns to assume the state of Ihram and arrive at the Holy Kaaba, start planning your pilgrimage with a reliable Islamic travel agency this year.
