Introduction

In Islam, supplications (dua) for deceased parents are acts of mercy, gratitude, and love for those who have returned to their Creator. Such prayers express thankfulness for their care and sacrifices while seeking Allah’s forgiveness, mercy, and a lofty station for them in Paradise.

This article explores the significance of these supplications as taught in the Quran and authentic hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). You will also find examples of these prayers in Arabic, with transliteration and English translation, to help you incorporate them into your spiritual life.

The Significance of Dua for Deceased Parents

Islam places great emphasis on honoring and showing kindness to one’s parents, even after their passing. Allah commands in the Quran:

“Your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Should one or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them 'uff' nor repel them, but speak to them a noble word.”
(Quran 17:23)

This verse reminds believers that respect and kindness toward parents do not end with their life in this world. Praying for them is one of the most sincere forms of gratitude and devotion a Muslim can offer.

Dua for Deceased Parents: An Act of Ongoing Mercy

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“When a human being dies, all of their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them.”
(Sahih Muslim)

This hadith highlights that a child’s prayer can continue to benefit their deceased parents long after their passing. It is one of the most beautiful and enduring gifts a believer can give.

Examples of Supplications (Dua) for Deceased Parents

1. Prayer for Mercy and Forgiveness

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Transliteration: Allahumma ghfir li wa li-wālidayya warham-humā kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīrā.

Translation: O Allah, forgive me and my parents and have mercy on them as they raised me when I was young.

2. Prayer for Elevating Their Rank in Paradise

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ قَبْرَهُمَا رَوْضَةً مِّن رِّيَاضِ الْجَنَّةِ وَاجْعَلْهُمَا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ

Transliteration: Allahumma ij‘al qabr-humā rawḍatan min riyāḍ al-jannah wa ij‘al-humā min aṣḥābil-yamīn.

Translation: O Allah, make their graves a garden from the gardens of Paradise, and count them among the righteous.

3. Prayer for Light in Their Graves

Arabic:

اللَّهُمَّ نَوِّرْ قُبُورَهُمَا وَجْعَلْهَا رَوْضَةً مِّن رِّيَاضِ الْجَنَّةِ

Transliteration: Allahumma nawwir qubūrahumā waj‘al-hā rawḍatan min riyāḍ al-jannah.

Translation: O Allah, illuminate their graves and make them gardens among the gardens of Paradise.

Conclusion: Honoring Parents Through Prayer

Praying for deceased parents is a profound act of love, gratitude, and mercy. It keeps alive the bond between a child and their parents beyond death and aligns with the values of compassion and thankfulness that Islam upholds.

These heartfelt supplications, rooted in the Quran and Sunnah, remind believers to remain connected to their parents through prayer, seeking Allah’s forgiveness and mercy on their behalf.

May Allah forgive all deceased parents, grant them light in their graves, and reunite families in the highest levels of Paradise.
