June 30, 2026 – Al-Dirassa Institute

Muslim man praying protected from harmful influences

In daily life, the believer may face hurtful words, backbiting, jealousy, bad company or harmful behavior. Islam teaches the Muslim to seek protection from Allah while maintaining justice, patience and balance.

A dua against harmful people does not mean wishing harm upon others. Rather, it means asking Allah for protection from bad intentions, harmful speech, relationships that weaken faith and situations that disturb the heart.

The believer does not live in fear of people. A Muslim places trust in Allah, guards the tongue, chooses relationships wisely and takes necessary means to protect oneself when needed.

Key points about dua against harmful people

Seeking protection from the harm of people means asking Allah to preserve one’s faith, heart, dignity and relationships from what may cause harm.

This protection may concern:

  • backbiting;
  • hurtful speech;
  • bad company;
  • jealousy;
  • bad influences;
  • harmful intentions;
  • unnecessary conflicts;
  • excessive reactions of one’s own heart.

Among the most well-known protection supplications is:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Transliteration: Bismillahi lladhi la yadurru maʿa-smihi shay’un fi l-ardi wa la fi s-sama’, wa Huwa s-Samiʿu l-ʿAlim.

Meaning: In the name of Allah, with whose Name nothing can cause harm on earth or in the sky. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

What does it mean to seek protection from harmful people?

Seeking protection from the harm of people means recognizing that the believer needs Allah in relationships and trials. Some people may hurt through words, actions, jealousy, backbiting or bad influence.

In response, the Muslim should not react with excess. The believer seeks refuge in Allah, remains fair in speech, avoids backbiting in return and takes lawful means to protect oneself.

This protection does not prevent acting with wisdom. Depending on the situation, it may be necessary to create distance, set boundaries, seek advice or look for legitimate help.

Protection supplications belong to a broader understanding of good character, patience and trust in Allah. To study these concepts with structure, students can follow Islamic studies online courses adapted to their level.

Supplication to ask Allah for protection

This supplication may be recited in the morning and evening to ask Allah for protection from what may harm.

Arabic text:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Transliteration: Bismillahi lladhi la yadurru maʿa-smihi shay’un fi l-ardi wa la fi s-sama’, wa Huwa s-Samiʿu l-ʿAlim.

Meaning: In the name of Allah, with whose Name nothing can cause harm on earth or in the sky. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

Meaning explained: This supplication reminds the believer that true protection belongs to Allah. A Muslim begins or ends the day with trust, asking Allah to protect from visible and hidden harm.

Supplication against the harm of the tongue, heart, hearing and sight

The Muslim asks Allah for protection from external harm, but also from personal weaknesses. Sometimes harm does not only come from others; it may come from the tongue, gaze, thoughts or heart.

Arabic text:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ سَمْعِي، وَمِنْ شَرِّ بَصَرِي، وَمِنْ شَرِّ لِسَانِي، وَمِنْ شَرِّ قَلْبِي

Transliteration: Allahumma inni aʿudhu bika min sharri samʿi, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi.

Meaning: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, the evil of my sight, the evil of my tongue and the evil of my heart.

Meaning explained: This supplication is essential because spiritual protection also begins with reforming oneself: controlling the tongue, guarding the gaze, purifying the heart and avoiding harm to others.

Supplication against harm and bad intentions

When the believer feels vulnerable or fears harm, this formula of trust in Allah may be repeated:

Arabic text:

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Transliteration: Hasbunallahu wa niʿma l-wakil.

Meaning: Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.

Meaning explained: This formula expresses complete trust in Allah. It is suitable when the believer feels powerless, exposed to harmful words or faced with a situation that cannot be controlled.

Supplication against the evil of what Allah created

The believer may also seek refuge in Allah from all created harm, visible or invisible.

Arabic text:

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Transliteration: Aʿudhu bi kalimati Llahi t-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

Meaning: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

Meaning explained: This supplication reminds the believer that protection belongs to Allah alone. It may be recited in moments of worry, before sleep or as part of an adhkar routine.

Protecting oneself from backbiting in Islam

Backbiting is one of the harms of the tongue. It damages relationships, feeds resentment and weakens the heart. The believer should avoid taking part in conversations where absent people are criticized unjustly.

To protect oneself from backbiting, it is useful to:

  • avoid discussions centered on other people’s faults;
  • change the topic when conversation becomes harmful;
  • gently remind others that backbiting is dangerous;
  • seek Allah’s forgiveness after falling into this sin;
  • keep company with people who remind one of Allah;
  • replace bad habits with dhikr, reading and learning.

A dua against harmful people is therefore not only a request for protection from others. It is also a request for protection from one’s own words.

Protecting oneself from bad company

Bad company can affect prayer, behavior, priorities, modesty, speech and the relationship with Allah. The Muslim should choose relationships wisely.

A bad influence may be someone who pushes toward sin, normalizes backbiting, encourages injustice, weakens faith or gradually distances a person from remembrance of Allah.

Protecting oneself does not mean despising people. It means preserving the heart, choosing a healthy environment and asking Allah to surround us with beneficial people.

How should a Muslim react to harmful people?

When facing unfair criticism, hurtful words or harmful behavior, the Muslim seeks balance between patience and self-protection.

It is recommended to:

  • remain fair in speech;
  • avoid answering backbiting with backbiting;
  • not feed unnecessary conflicts;
  • set boundaries when necessary;
  • create distance if the situation becomes harmful;
  • seek advice from a reliable person;
  • entrust the affair to Allah sincerely.

Being patient does not mean accepting every injustice without limits. Islam encourages patience, but also wisdom, dignity and self-protection.

Difference between harmful people and real injustice

A dua against harmful people mainly concerns protection from harmful speech, backbiting, jealousy, bad influences and behavior that disturbs the heart.

When a person suffers real injustice, oppression, false accusation or violation of rights, the search intent is different.

Understanding supplications in Arabic

Many Muslims recite supplications in Arabic using transliteration. This is a useful first step, but understanding the words helps one call upon Allah with more focus and presence of heart.

Words such as أَعُوذُ, شَرّ, لِسَان, قَلْب, سَمِيع and وَكِيل often appear in protection supplications.

To recite supplications more accurately, it is useful to follow a structured path to learn Arabic online.

Understanding supplications is not limited to reading their translation. Studying a Quranic Arabic course helps students recognize frequent words from the Quran, duas and religious expressions.
