In Islamic faith, illness is a trial that can affect the body, the heart and the mind. It reminds the believer of human fragility, the need for Allah and the immense value of health.

A dua against illness allows the believer to ask Allah for healing, patience, protection and comfort. It does not replace medical care, but it accompanies the believer’s efforts to seek treatment with trust and balance.

In this article, you will discover several supplications related to illness, their meanings, transliterations and practical advice to recite them with sincerity.

Illness as a Trial in Islam

In Islam, illness is not only physical suffering. It can also become an opportunity to return to Allah, increase supplication, strengthen patience and become more aware of blessings that are often forgotten.

A believer should not despair when facing illness. He seeks the permissible means of healing, consults healthcare professionals, follows suitable treatments and places his trust in Allah.

This balanced approach protects against two mistakes: relying only on material means while forgetting Allah, or refusing medical care under the pretext of trust in Allah.

Short Dua Against Illness

Among the supplications a believer may recite to ask for health and protection from illness is:

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي سَمْعِي، اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي فِي بَصَرِي، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ
Transliteration: Allahumma ‘afini fi badani, Allahumma ‘afini fi sam‘i, Allahumma ‘afini fi basari, la ilaha illa Anta.
Translation: O Allah, grant me well-being in my body, in my hearing and in my sight. There is no deity worthy of worship except You.

This supplication is a request for preservation, well-being and protection. It may be recited in the morning, in the evening or whenever a person feels the need to ask Allah for health.

Dua for Healing in Islam

To ask directly for healing, one of the well-known supplications is:

Arabic: اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ، اشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا
Transliteration: Allahumma rabba-n-nas, adhhibi-l-ba’s, ishfi anta-sh-shafi, la shifa’a illa shifa’uka, shifa’an la yughadiru saqama.
Translation: O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness.

This supplication reminds the believer that healing belongs to Allah. A Muslim may recite it for himself or for someone who is ill, while continuing to take the necessary medical means.

Dua to Ask for Health

Health is an immense blessing. A believer may ask Allah to preserve his health even before becoming ill, because prevention, gratitude and supplication are part of a balanced spiritual life.

O Allah, protect my health, preserve my body, grant me strength, patience and beneficial healing if I am tested with illness.

It is permissible to call upon Allah in English or in any language. However, learning some supplications in Arabic helps Muslims connect with the transmitted formulas and understand their depth more clearly.

Medicine and Dua: Keeping the Right Balance

Islam does not oppose medicine and supplication. A sick person consults, seeks treatment, rests, follows suitable medical advice and asks Allah to place healing in those means.

Correct trust means making the necessary efforts while knowing that healing belongs to Allah. The heart relies on Allah, while the body benefits from permissible means.

In case of illness, persistent pain or worrying symptoms, it is important to consult a qualified healthcare professional.

When to Recite a Dua Against Illness

Supplications against illness may be recited at different times:

  • in the morning and evening;
  • when feeling pain;
  • when a loved one is ill;
  • after prayer;
  • during a period of treatment;
  • when feeling worried or tired;
  • when asking Allah for patience, healing and peace.

What matters most is to recite these supplications with sincerity, trust and humility, without falling into impatience or despair.

Finding Spiritual Comfort During Illness

Illness can bring worry, fear, fatigue or a feeling of weakness. In these moments, supplication helps the believer maintain a strong connection with Allah.

A Muslim may ask for:

  • healing;
  • patience;
  • peace of heart;
  • ease during treatment;
  • protection from worsening illness;
  • reward for the trial being endured.

Supplication does not always remove difficulty immediately, but it gives the believer inner strength, hope and a calmer way to face the trial.

Understanding Duas in Arabic

Many Muslims recite supplications in Arabic using transliteration. This is a useful first step, but understanding the words being recited allows the believer to call upon Allah with more concentration and presence of heart.

Words such as عَافِنِي, بَدَنِي, اشْفِ, الشَّافِي and شِفَاء often appear in supplications related to health and healing.

To progress, you can begin with the Arabic alphabet, then improve your Arabic reading, Arabic pronunciation and Arabic vocabulary. Studying Quranic Arabic also helps you better understand duas, Quranic verses and religious expressions.
