Dua when it rains: Arabic, transliteration and translation

What supplication should be recited when it rains?

When rain begins to fall, the Sunnah teaches a very short supplication in which the Muslim asks Allah to make the rain beneficial. The dua when it rains, narrated from ‘Ā’ishah رضي الله عنها, is easy to remember:

صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Transliteration:
Ṣayyiban nāfi‘an.

Translation:
An abundant and beneficial rain.

This formula is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1032. Another narration also mentions the wording:

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Transliteration:
Allāhumma-j‘alhu ṣayyiban nāfi‘an.

Translation:
O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.

This supplication recalls a simple idea: rain is a blessing when it brings water, life and fertility without becoming a cause of harm.

What does “Ṣayyiban nāfi‘an” mean?

The formula is short, but each word has a precise meaning.

« Ṣayyiban »

صَيِّبًا

The word ṣayyib refers to rain falling from the sky, with the idea of real and abundant rainfall.

In Sahih al-Bukhari, the chapter containing this hadith is specifically devoted to what is said when rain falls.

« Nāfi‘an »

نَافِعًا

Nāfi‘ means “beneficial”, “useful” or “profitable”.

The believer is therefore not simply asking for rain. They ask Allah to make it truly beneficial: useful water, fertile land, resources for people and animals, without destruction or harm.

What is the full dua when it rains?

The wording most commonly memorized is:

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Transliteration:
Allāhumma ṣayyiban nāfi‘an.

Meaning:
O Allah, grant us beneficial rain.

In Sahih al-Bukhari 1032, the reported text directly contains:

صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Another authentic narration reported by An-Nasa’i explicitly phrases the request as:

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

The meaning remains the same: asking Allah to make the rain truly beneficial.

What should be said after the rain?

After the rain has fallen, another statement reported in the Sunnah reminds the believer that this blessing comes from Allah:

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ

Transliteration:
Muṭirnā bi-faḍli-Llāhi wa raḥmatih.

Translation:
We have been given rain by the grace of Allah and His mercy.

This wording is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari.

It teaches the believer not to view rain only as a natural phenomenon, but also as a blessing for which Allah is thanked.

Why say “by the grace of Allah and His mercy”?

The hadith narrated from Zayd ibn Khālid al-Juhanī رضي الله عنه explains that the Prophet ﷺ questioned his Companions after a rainy night.

He taught that the person who said:

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ

correctly attributed the rain to Allah’s grace and mercy.

The context of the hadith also warns against attributing rain to the stars according to the superstitious beliefs of the time.

This obviously does not mean that studying meteorological mechanisms is forbidden. Understanding clouds, air masses and precipitation describes observable causes; the hadith concerns the religious attribution of the blessing and rejects the belief that the stars possess independent power.

Can you make a personal dua while it is raining?

The believer may naturally take advantage of this moment to ask Allah for personal needs: forgiveness, protection, ease, provision, health, guidance or good for the family.

However, two things should be distinguished:

• the Prophetic formula specifically reported when rain falls: Ṣayyiban nāfi‘an;
• personal supplications that each person may address to Allah according to their needs.

It is not necessary for every personal request to be made in Arabic. A person may call upon Allah with their own words and in a language they master.

Is dua made in the rain always answered?

It is common to encounter the claim that “every dua made in the rain is certainly answered”. This wording is too absolute.

Some reports mention supplication at the time of rain among moments when acceptance is especially hoped for. However, this should not be turned into a mechanical promise that every request made in the rain will necessarily receive the exact response desired.

The general rules of dua remain the same: call upon Allah sincerely, ask for what is lawful, avoid impatience and place one’s trust in Allah.

What should be said if the rain becomes too heavy?

Rain is generally a blessing, but it can become excessive and cause flooding, damage or make travel dangerous.

When the rain became very heavy in Madinah and caused difficulties, the Prophet ﷺ supplicated:

اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا

Transliteration:
Allāhumma ḥawālaynā wa lā ‘alaynā.

Translation:
O Allah, around us and not upon us.

The account is reported in Sahih al-Bukhari.

The supplication is remarkable for its balance: the Prophet ﷺ did not ask for the rain to disappear altogether. He asked that it be directed to places where it would be useful without continuing to harm the inhabitants.

Is there a dua against floods?

There is no need to invent a special formula called a “dua against floods”.

When excessive rain creates danger, the authentically reported supplication:

اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلَا عَلَيْنَا

is directly relevant to rain that has become too abundant.

A person may also ask Allah for protection, safety and preservation in their own words.

In a genuinely dangerous situation, supplication obviously accompanies concrete safety measures. One should follow the authorities’ instructions, avoid flood-prone areas and not take unnecessary risks.

Is rain considered a mercy in Islam?

The Quran repeatedly mentions rain as a means by which Allah revives the earth and causes vegetation to grow.

This helps explain why the Prophetic supplication specifically asks for rain that is nāfi‘ah, beneficial.

The same rain may be essential for parched land and become harmful when it falls excessively. The believer therefore asks for goodness and benefit rather than unlimited abundance.

Can a Muslim rejoice when it rains?

Yes. Beneficial rain is a blessing in which the believer may rejoice and for which Allah is thanked.

The formula:

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ

expresses precisely this gratitude: “We have been given rain by the grace of Allah and His mercy.”

The Muslim thus learns to connect ordinary events of daily life with shukr, gratitude.

What is the difference between asking for rain and making dua when it rains?

These are two different situations.

When rain is already falling, one may say:

صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

to ask that it be beneficial.

When rain is lacking, Islamic tradition contains istisqā’, meaning asking Allah for rain. Authentic hadiths report that the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah for rain during drought.

The dua recited while rain is already falling should therefore not be confused with the supplications and rulings relating to the prayer for rain.

How can the dua for rain be memorized easily?

The main formula consists of only two words:

صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Ṣayyiban nāfi‘an.

The simplest method is to associate the sight of rain directly with these two words.

You can remember:

• ṣayyib = falling rain;
• nāfi‘ = beneficial.

Once this formula is learned, memorize the one recited after the rain:

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ

Learning by situation is generally more effective than trying to memorize a long list of transliterated supplications without context.

Learn daily supplications gradually

Rain is one of many ordinary events to which the Sunnah connects the remembrance of Allah.

A Muslim can gradually learn the supplications related to waking, meals, the home, the mosque, ablution, travel and changing circumstances.

It is better to learn a few authentic formulas with their meaning and use them regularly than to memorize several pages of transliteration quickly.

A supplication as short as Ṣayyiban nāfi‘an shows the value of understanding a few Arabic words.

Should “Allahumma sayyiban nafi‘an” be repeated several times?

No obligatory number of repetitions is established in the hadith of ‘Ā’ishah. There is therefore no need to arbitrarily fix a precise number in order to follow this Sunnah.
