Figs In Islam: Health Benefits, Use & Quran Mentions

The fig plant is one of the only five plants mentioned in the Quran, along with olives, grapes, pomegranates, and dates. Figs are well reputed to be a good source of several essential minerals; including magnesium, manganese, calcium, copper, potassium, and Vitamin K. They are rich in dietary fiber and provide a host of beneficial antioxidants. Where are figs mentioned in the Quran?

The reference to the fig and the olive in Surah At-Tin (The Fig) is open to interpretation, but Islamic scholars generally agree it highlights the significance and sacredness of these fruits. This is the only instance in which figs are mentioned in the Quran, appearing in this brief Surah. The majestic fig tree in the Middle East.

As figs are also mentioned in many Hadiths:

About the Quranic verse, Al-Bara bin Azib narrated:

“The Prophet would recite: By the fig and the olive for Isha.” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 310]

In Sunan an-Nasa’i 1001, a further narration adds:

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was on a journey and recited: ‘By the fig and the olive’ in the first rak’ah of Isha’.”

These narrations reflect the significance of the fig, which is highlighted in the Quran. Although the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) frequently consumed other fruits like dates, the benefits of figs and similar fruits have become more evident recently.

What are the health benefits of eating figs?

Rich in fiber: Figs provide 2.9 grams of dietary fiber per serving (two small fresh figs), aiding digestion, supporting weight management, and helping lower cholesterol.

Heart health benefits: The fiber in figs helps reduce blood cholesterol levels, while their potassium content helps regulate blood pressure by mitigating the effects of sodium.

Loaded with antioxidants: The antioxidants in figs combat harmful free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, which may help lower the risk of chronic diseases.

Great for bone health: Figs are a good source of calcium and magnesium, both vital for maintaining strong bones.

Support digestive health: Figs contain natural enzymes that aid digestion, making them a good choice for people with digestive issues.

Aid sleep: Figs are rich in magnesium, a mineral that promotes relaxation and can help improve sleep quality.

Sexual weakness: Figs have been known for ages for reducing sexual weakness. Soak 2-3 figs in milk overnight and eat them in the morning to enhance your sexual power.

Prevent constipation: There are 5 grams of fiber per three-fig serving. So, it helps in healthy bowel function and prevents constipation.

Prevent colon cancer: The presence of fiber helps to mop up and usher out cancer-causing substances.
