Child learning prayer with his father

Many beginners ask the same question: how long does it take to learn how to pray in Islam? The answer depends on the person, their Arabic level, memory, consistency and support.

In general, a beginner can learn the basic structure of prayer in a few days. The essential movements and short recitations can often be learned in one to two weeks. Becoming more fluent, confident and focused may take several weeks or months.

Can prayer be learned in a few days?

Yes, it is possible to learn the general order of prayer in a few days: standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting and ending with salam.

However, knowing the movements is only the first step. Prayer also includes recitations, meanings, concentration and rules that are learned gradually.

How long to learn the basics of Salah?

  • First days: learn the order of movements;
  • First week: practice takbir, standing, bowing, prostration and sitting;
  • One to two weeks: memorize essential short recitations;
  • Several weeks: improve pronunciation, rhythm and confidence;
  • Several months: deepen concentration, meanings and fluency.

A 7-day beginner progression

  • Day 1: understand what Salah is;
  • Day 2: learn the main positions;
  • Day 3: learn takbir and salam;
  • Day 4: begin Al-Fatihah;
  • Day 5: learn ruku and sujud words;
  • Day 6: practice a full prayer with support;
  • Day 7: repeat and correct main mistakes.

Do you need Arabic before praying?

The main recitations of Salah are in Arabic. A beginner does not need to master Arabic before beginning to pray. The important thing is to start learning and improve gradually.
