Dua to Become Rich in Islam: Asking for Rizq, Barakah and Halal Wealth

November 8, 2023 – Al-Dirassa Institute

Muslim man asking Allah for blessed provision

In Islam, it is permissible to ask Allah for abundant, lawful and blessed provision. The believer may supplicate to the Lord for better rizq, financial stability, barakah in wealth and useful richness.

However, asking Allah to become rich does not mean seeking money as an end in itself. In Islam, wealth is a trust and a test. It must be earned through halal means, used for good, accompanied by gratitude and kept away from injustice, pride and haram.

A dua to become rich should therefore be understood correctly: the Muslim does not ask only for more money, but for lawful, pure, sufficient and blessed provision that helps one live with dignity, support family, give charity and remain close to Allah.

Key points about dua to become rich

It is permissible to ask Allah for useful wealth, halal provision and barakah in one’s possessions. But no supplication should be understood as a magical formula that automatically makes a person rich.

The believer asks Allah for rizq while working honestly, avoiding unlawful money, giving according to ability, seeking forgiveness and placing trust in Allah.

Among the most suitable supplications for halal and sufficient provision:

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

Transliteration: Allahumma-kfini bi halalika ʿan haramika wa aghnini bi fadlika ʿamman siwak.

Meaning: O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful against what You have forbidden, and enrich me by Your grace so that I need no one besides You.

Can one ask Allah to become rich?

Yes, it is permissible to ask Allah for abundant, lawful and blessed provision. But the believer must correct the intention. One should not ask for wealth that distances from Allah, but wealth that helps obey Him.

Wealth may be beneficial if it allows one to live with dignity, support family, pay debts, help the poor, fund useful works and remain grateful to Allah.

It may also become a trial if it leads to pride, injustice, neglect of prayer, excessive attachment to this world or seeking unlawful income.

Rizq in Islam: more than money

The word rizq refers to the provision Allah grants to His creation. It may include money, but it is not limited to it.

Rizq may also be faith, health, family, time, knowledge, peace of heart, good relationships, lawful opportunities and the ability to do good.

A person may have much money but little barakah, while another may have less wealth but live with serenity, dignity and gratitude. Read more in our article on rizq in Islam.

Dua for halal and sufficient provision

This supplication is especially important because it asks Allah to suffice us with halal and keep us away from haram.

Explanation: this dua does not ask only for money. It asks Allah for halal sufficiency, protection from forbidden income and richness from His grace.

Supplication for barakah in money

Barakah does not only mean having more. It means that Allah places good, benefit, stability and blessing in what He grants.

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لِي فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنِي، وَزِدْنِي مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

Transliteration: Allahumma barik li fima razaqtani wa zidni min fadlik.

Meaning: O Allah, bless what You have provided me and increase me from Your grace.

To understand this concept better, read our article on barakah in Islam.

Quranic supplication for good and opening

The believer may also ask Allah for every good needed with this Quranic supplication:

رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ

Transliteration: Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqir.

Meaning: My Lord, I am in great need of whatever good You send down to me.

Reference: Surah Al-Qasas, 28:24.

Explanation: this supplication expresses the servant’s need before Allah. It is suitable when asking for relief, a lawful opportunity, financial improvement, work, marriage or any good only Allah can grant.

Can personal supplications be used for rizq?

Yes. It is permissible to supplicate in English or one’s own language. For example:

O Allah, grant me lawful, pure and blessed provision. Keep me away from haram, protect me from injustice, place barakah in my wealth and make my wealth a means to obey You, support my family and do good.

Some long supplications circulate about rizq. If a formula is not clearly authenticated as prophetic, it is better to present it as a possible personal supplication, not as a definitely reported one.

Wealth, barakah and contentment

In Islam, true wealth is not limited to money. A person may have many possessions without peace, while another may have less but live with dignity, gratitude and trust in Allah.

Contentment does not mean abandoning effort. It means recognizing Allah’s blessings, avoiding excessive envy, seeking halal and accepting that Allah’s wisdom is greater than our immediate perception.

Causes of rizq in Islam

Supplications are important, but they must be accompanied by lawful means. Tawakkul does not mean remaining inactive. It means making the necessary effort while the heart relies on Allah.

  • seeking halal income;
  • avoiding forbidden earnings;
  • working seriously and honestly;
  • improving skills;
  • respecting the rights of others;
  • avoiding wastefulness;
  • giving charity according to ability;
  • preserving family ties;
  • seeking Allah’s forgiveness;
  • thanking Allah for existing blessings;
  • trusting Allah without abandoning effort.

Istighfar and provision

Istighfar, seeking forgiveness, is one of the great spiritual means of returning to Allah, purifying the heart and seeking His mercy.

The believer may repeat:

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ

Transliteration: Astaghfirullah.

Meaning: I seek Allah’s forgiveness.

Seeking forgiveness should not be seen as a mere technique to obtain money. It is first a sincere return to Allah, which may open doors of good according to His wisdom.

Mistakes to avoid when asking Allah for wealth

  • thinking a supplication automatically makes one rich;
  • seeking money through unlawful means;
  • neglecting work and lawful causes;
  • asking for wealth out of pride or showing off;
  • forgetting gratitude and charity;
  • thinking wealth is always a sign of divine approval;
  • measuring success only by money;
  • forgetting that wealth is a responsibility.

Difference between dua to become rich and dua against poverty

Dua to become rich mainly asks Allah for increased rizq, halal provision, barakah and useful wealth.

Dua against poverty is more about protection from need, humiliation, financial hardship, heavy debts and dependency that weakens dignity.
