Dua Against Poverty in Islam: Seeking Protection from Need and Humiliation

October 14, 2023 – Al-Dirassa Institute

Open hands making dua against poverty

Poverty, lack, debt and financial hardship can become heavy trials. They may affect family stability, dignity, emotional well-being and the ability to live peacefully.

In Islam, the believer is not alone in these difficulties. A Muslim turns to Allah, seeks protection from humiliating need, looks for lawful provision and acts with patience, trust and responsibility.

A dua against poverty is a supplication through which the Muslim asks Allah for protection from lack, humiliation, excessive dependence, injustice and situations that may weaken faith or dignity.

Key points about dua against poverty

A dua against poverty does not mean that poverty is always shameful or a punishment. It means the believer asks Allah to be protected from humiliating need, crushing lack, heavy debt and difficulties that may push a person toward haram or injustice.

Among the important supplications to learn:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْفَقْرِ، وَالْقِلَّةِ، وَالذِّلَّةِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ

Transliteration: Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika mina al-faqri, wa al-qillati, wa adh-dhillati, wa a‘udhu bika min an azlima aw uzlam.

Meaning: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from poverty, lack and humiliation. And I seek refuge in You from wronging others or being wronged.

Poverty in Islam: a trial and a responsibility

In Islam, poverty can be a trial. It may test patience, faith, trust in Allah and the ability to remain upright despite difficulty. But poverty is not shameful in itself.

Many righteous believers lived with material simplicity. What matters is the response: keeping faith, avoiding forbidden means, preserving dignity and continuing to seek lawful provision.

Islam also encourages solidarity. Zakat, charity, helping relatives, supporting the poor and social justice are part of religious practice. Poverty is therefore not only an individual matter; it also reminds the community of its duty to help.

Supplications against poverty belong to a broader understanding of faith, patience, justice and tawakkul. To progress with structure, students can follow Islamic studies online courses adapted to their level.

Supplication against poverty, lack and humiliation

This supplication asks Allah to protect the believer from poverty when it becomes a cause of distress, excessive dependence or humiliation.

Meaning explained: This supplication shows that the Muslim is not only asking for material improvement. The believer also seeks protection from humiliation, injustice and situations that may weaken dignity or faith.

Understanding the words of this supplication

This dua brings together several important dimensions.

Poverty: the believer asks for protection from poverty when it becomes a cause of distress, humiliating need or difficulty preserving dignity.

Lack: lack can concern money, but also means, opportunities, strength or the ability to provide for one’s family.

Humiliation: the believer asks Allah to preserve dignity and not be placed in a situation of crushing need or dependence.

Injustice: a person in difficulty may be tempted to act unjustly, or may be exposed to the injustice of others. This supplication reminds the believer to remain upright during hardship.

Dua during financial hardship

When a person is going through financial hardship, one may ask Allah for an opening, lawful provision and improvement using personal words.

One may say, for example:

O Allah, relieve my situation, protect me from humiliating need, open a halal door for me, make my affairs easy, protect me from heavy debt and place barakah in what You provide.

It is permissible to call upon Allah in English or in one’s own language. The essential point is to ask with sincerity, humility, trust and patience.

Tawakkul does not mean remaining passive

Dua against poverty must be understood with tawakkul, meaning trust in Allah. Tawakkul does not mean abandoning effort. It means acting correctly while placing the heart’s reliance upon Allah.

The Muslim should therefore seek lawful causes:

  • work honestly;
  • seek halal income;
  • avoid forbidden earnings;
  • learn a skill or improve abilities;
  • manage expenses wisely;
  • avoid wastefulness;
  • seek advice when necessary;
  • avoid unnecessary debt;
  • preserve prayer and connection with Allah.

Supplications do not replace action. They give meaning to action, remind the believer of dependence upon Allah and protect the heart from arrogance or despair.

Avoiding unlawful income during hardship

When facing financial hardship, some people may be tempted by forbidden means. Islam reminds the believer that blessing is not found in what is unlawful.

A modest halal income is better than forbidden gain that weakens faith, troubles the heart and removes barakah.

The believer asks Allah to open halal doors, protect from doubtful earnings, keep away from injustice and place blessing in what He provides.

Istighfar as a cause of relief

Istighfar, or seeking forgiveness, is one of the great spiritual means of returning to Allah and seeking His mercy.

Allah mentions in the Quran the words of Nuh عليه السلام to his people:

فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّارًا ۝ يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا ۝ وَيُمْدِدْكُمْ بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ وَيَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ أَنْهَارًا

Meaning: I said, “Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving. He will send rain from the sky upon you in abundance, increase you in wealth and children, and provide you with gardens and rivers.”

Reference: Surah Nuh, 71:10-12.

The believer may repeat:

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ

Transliteration: Astaghfirullah.

Meaning: I ask Allah for forgiveness.

Istighfar reminds the believer that relief does not depend only on material means. It also depends on the relationship with Allah, sincerity, repentance and staying away from sins.

Charity despite difficulty

When possible, even with a small amount, charity is a cause of purification, solidarity and barakah. The believer gives according to means, without placing oneself or family in hardship.

Charity reminds the Muslim that money belongs to Allah and that the believer is not concerned only with personal difficulty. One remains attentive to others, even while going through a trial.

When should this dua against poverty be recited?

This supplication can be recited regularly, especially:

  • during financial hardship;
  • after prayers;
  • when fearing lack;
  • when fearing debt;
  • when seeking lawful provision;
  • during professional or family transitions;
  • before an important financial decision;
  • when feeling anxious about the future.

It is also beneficial to increase gratitude, istighfar, concrete efforts and requests for protection from unlawful earnings.

Difference between dua against poverty and dua to become rich

A dua against poverty mainly aims at protection from lack, humiliation, heavy debt and difficult financial situations.

A dua to become rich is more about asking for increased rizq, barakah, halal provision and useful wealth.
