Grammar Rules for Arabic Questions
In an Arabic question, it is important to observe the final vowel of the word that follows the question word.
When a question word comes before a definite noun, the noun is often in the nominative case and carries a final damma.
- أَيْنَ الْكِتَابُ؟: where is the book?
- أَيْنَ الْمِفْتَاحُ؟: where is the key?
When the question word comes before a proper noun or an indefinite noun, the noun may carry a double damma.
- أَيْنَ مُحَمَّدٌ؟: where is Muhammad?
- أَيَاسِرٌ فِي الْمَطْبَخِ؟: is Yasir in the kitchen?
However, when a question word comes before a preposition, the preposition does not take a damma. Prepositions are among the words whose final vowel does not change.
- مَاذَا عَلَى الصَّخْرِ؟: what is on the rock?
