The dua for travel is one of the important supplications a Muslim can recite when leaving home, starting a journey or travelling for a longer trip. In Islam, travel is a moment when the believer remembers their dependence on Allah, asks for His protection and places trust in Him.
Travelling can bring many benefits: work, study, visiting family, discovering new places or performing acts of worship such as Hajj and Umrah. But travel can also involve fatigue, delays, uncertainty and anxiety. This is why Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught precious supplications to ask Allah for ease, safety and a blessed return.
Why Make Dua Before Travelling?
Making dua before travelling reminds the believer that true protection comes from Allah. Even when a Muslim takes the necessary precautions, prepares the journey and chooses safe means of transport, they know that safety, ease and a peaceful return depend on Allah.
The traveler’s dua expresses several important meanings: trust in Allah, asking for protection, gratitude for blessings and remembering the final return to the Lord.
The Dua When Leaving Home Before Travel
Before leaving home, a Muslim may recite a simple and well-known supplication. It is suitable when leaving the house, whether for a short trip or a longer journey.
Arabic Text
بِسْمِ اللهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ
Transliteration
Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘ala Allah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.
English Meaning
In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no power and no strength except through Allah.
This supplication teaches the believer to leave home with trust, humility and awareness that they do not depend only on their own means.

Transliteration of the Traveler’s Dua
Subhana alladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.
Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wat-taqwa, wa min al-‘amali ma tarda.
Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hadha, watwi ‘anna bu‘dah.
Allahumma anta as-sahibu fis-safar, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl.
Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika min wa‘tha’i as-safar, wa ka’abati al-manzar, wa su’i al-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahl.
English Meaning
Glory be to the One who has placed this at our service, while we would not have been able to control it by ourselves. Surely, to our Lord we shall return.
O Allah, we ask You in this journey of ours for righteousness, piety and deeds that please You.
O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance for us.
O Allah, You are the Companion during the journey and the Protector of our family in our absence.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, from a distressing sight and from an unpleasant return regarding our wealth and family.
What to Say When Returning from Travel
When returning from travel, it is reported that the believer may add a formula of remembrance and gratitude:
آيِبُونَ، تَائِبُونَ، عَابِدُونَ، لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ
Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun.
We return, repentant, worshipping and praising our Lord.
This phrase reminds the Muslim that returning safely from a journey is also a blessing. The believer thanks Allah for protection, ease and the opportunity to reunite with family.
Why Is the Traveler’s Dua Important?
A traveler often experiences a special situation: they leave their usual environment, family, habits and comfort. They may face fatigue, delays, difficulties or danger.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned that the supplication of the traveler is among the supplications that have great importance. This encourages the Muslim to make frequent dua during travel, for themselves, their family and other believers.
When Should You Recite the Travel Dua?
The travel dua can be recited when starting the journey, when boarding a means of transport or when the journey truly begins. It can also be repeated during the trip, especially when the heart feels the need for protection, ease or calm.
It is also good to make many supplications throughout the journey: asking for safety, ease, goodness, protection for one’s family, a peaceful return and acceptance of good deeds.
The Muslim’s Behavior While Travelling
Travel is not only a physical movement from one place to another. It is also a moment when the Muslim should preserve their character, prayer, speech and relations with others.
- maintain prayer according to one’s ability;
- avoid arguments and hurtful speech;
- respect the people travelling with you;
- be patient with delays and difficulties;
- preserve supplications and remembrance of Allah;
