Illustration symbolizing the dua of the oppressed against injustice

The dua of the oppressed holds a special place in Islam. When a person suffers injustice, false accusation, humiliation, abuse or the loss of rights, he or she can turn to Allah sincerely to ask for justice, protection and relief.

The dua of the oppressed is not an invitation to revenge or unlimited hatred. It is an act of faith through which the believer entrusts the matter to Allah, the Most Just of judges, while taking lawful means to protect oneself and recover oneโ€™s rights.

In this article, you will find supplications against injustice, their Arabic text, transliteration and translation, as well as important reminders about patience, the rights of the oppressed and how to act with justice in Islam.

The Seriousness of Injustice in Islam

Injustice, called ุธูู„ู’ู… in Arabic, is a serious matter in Islam. A Muslim must avoid being unjust, even toward someone he dislikes or with whom he has a conflict.

Allah says in the Quran:

Approximate meaning: O you who believe, stand firmly for Allah as witnesses in justice, and do not let hatred for a people lead you to be unjust. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.

Reference: Surah Al-Maโ€™idah, 5:8.

This verse reminds us that justice is a spiritual requirement. Even when hurt, the believer must remain within the limits loved by Allah: truth, fairness, restraint and the search for a just outcome.

What Are the Rights of the Oppressed in Islam?

Islam recognizes the rights of the oppressed and forbids harming others. A person who suffers injustice has the right to ask Allah for help, seek protection, pursue his or her rights through lawful means and receive support from believers when possible.

The rights of the oppressed include:

  • the right to ask Allah for justice;
  • the right to protect oneself from harm;
  • the right to make the truth appear;
  • the right to recover what belongs to them;
  • the right to seek advice or mediation;
  • the right to receive moral and practical support;
  • the right not to be blamed for an injustice they suffer.

At the same time, the oppressed person must avoid responding to injustice with a greater injustice. He or she may seek justice, but should protect the heart as much as possible from excessive hatred, lying, slander and unjust revenge.

Why Is the Dua of the Oppressed Powerful?

The supplication of the oppressed is powerful because it often comes from a broken, sincere and needy heart. The oppressed person may have no apparent means left to defend himself or herself. He or she then turns to Allah, the One who knows the full truth of every situation.

Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ warned against injustice and reminded people to fear the supplication of the one who has been oppressed. This shows that peopleโ€™s rights must never be neglected and that oppression is not a light matter.

Being a believer is not only about praying. It also means respecting the rights of others, avoiding harm, repairing injustices committed and asking forgiveness when one has wronged someone.

Hasbiyallahu wa Niโ€˜ma l-Wakil in the Face of Injustice

When the oppressed person feels powerless, he or she can repeat a formula of trust in Allah:

Arabic Text

ุญูŽุณู’ุจููŠูŽ ุงู„ู„ู‘ูŽู‡ู ูˆูŽู†ูุนู’ู…ูŽ ุงู„ู’ูˆูŽูƒููŠู„ู

Transliteration

Hasbiyallahu wa niโ€˜ma l-wakil.

Translation

Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best disposer of affairs.

This formula reminds the believer that, even when feeling weak or abandoned, Allah remains the best protector. It calms the heart and helps the believer entrust the matter to Allah.

Can You Make Dua Against an Unjust Person?

In Islam, it is permissible for an oppressed person to ask Allah for justice. However, the believer must avoid exceeding the limits or asking for something unjust and disproportionate.

It is better to ask Allah:

  • to make the truth appear;
  • to protect from harm;
  • to restore oneโ€™s rights;
  • to grant a just outcome;
  • to calm the heart;
  • to guide the unjust person if that is better;
  • to prevent the oppressor from continuing the injustice.

A Muslim should not turn supplication into permanent hatred. He or she seeks justice while protecting the heart from excessive resentment.

Patience, Action and Lawful Means Against Injustice

Patience, called ุตูŽุจู’ุฑ, does not mean passively accepting injustice without doing anything. It means remaining firm, avoiding excess, trusting Allah and taking lawful means to defend oneโ€™s rights.

Depending on the situation, it may be necessary to:

  • seek advice from a trustworthy person;
  • gather evidence;
  • look for mediation;
  • protect oneself physically or emotionally;
  • seek legitimate help;
  • alert a competent authority;
  • avoid responding with lies or slander.

Supplication does not mean abandoning all action. The believer asks Allah for help and justice while acting within lawful limits.

How to Make Dua When You Are Oppressed

When facing oppression, it is recommended to turn to Allah with calmness, dignity and trust. To make dua sincerely, it is useful to:

  • begin by praising Allah;
  • send blessings upon the Prophet ๏ทบ;
  • present your situation to Allah with humility;
  • ask for justice without excess or injustice;
  • ask for protection from harm;
  • ask for relief and patience;
  • place your trust in Allah;
  • take lawful means to protect yourself.

The oppressed person should remember that Allah knows what is visible and what is hidden. Even if people do not see the injustice, Allah knows it perfectly.

When Should the Oppressed Person Make Dua?

The oppressed person may make dua at any time, especially:

  • when suffering family, social or professional injustice;
  • when being falsely accused;
  • when being humiliated, despised or deprived of rights;
  • when unable to defend oneself through lawful means;
  • when feeling deep inner distress;
  • after prayer;
  • during the night, in moments of reflection.

It is important to make this dua with a sincere heart, without transgressing limits and without asking for injustice in return.

Mistakes to Avoid When Making the Dua of the Oppressed

Some mistakes can weaken the quality of the dua and harm the believerโ€™s heart:

  • making dua only out of anger without seeking justice;
  • asking for something unjust or disproportionate;
  • forgetting to ask for patience and peace of heart;
  • despairing of Allahโ€™s response;
  • neglecting lawful means of protection;
  • responding to injustice with a greater injustice;
  • spreading accusations without proof.

The dua of the oppressed should therefore be made with sincerity, restraint and trust in Allah.

The Difference Between Injustice and the Harm of People

The dua of the oppressed concerns a real situation of injustice: oppression, false accusation, abuse, violated rights or harm suffered.

Supplications against the harm of people relate more broadly to protection from harmful words, backbiting, bad company, jealousy or behaviors that disturb the heart.
