Illustration symbolizing protection against the evil eye in Islam

The evil eye, known as al-‘ayn in Arabic, is recognized in Islam as a real matter. It may affect a person, their health, children, possessions or success when envy, excessive admiration or jealousy are not accompanied by remembrance of Allah and a request for blessing.

To protect themselves, Muslims turn to Allah through supplications, remembrance, Quran recitation and sincere trust in their Lord. Whether you are looking for a dua against the evil eye, a supplication against the evil eye or protection against jealousy, the most important thing is to seek refuge in Allah with faith and sincerity.

Here is a short dua against the evil eye:

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ

Transliteration: A‘udhu bi kalimati-llahi at-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammah wa min kulli ‘aynin lammah.

Translation: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every harmful creature and every evil eye.

What is the evil eye in Islam?

The evil eye refers to harm that may affect a person through an envious, jealous or admiring gaze when it is not accompanied by remembrance of Allah and asking Him for blessing. In Islam, the believer should not fall into excessive fear, but should take the means of protection taught by the religion.

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, taught that the evil eye is real. This does not mean that a Muslim should live in anxiety, but rather that they should protect themselves through authentic supplications, Quran recitation and trust in Allah.

The greatest protection is to remember that nothing can harm or benefit except by the permission of Allah.

For those who cannot yet read Arabic, transliteration can help at the beginning. Here is a simple supplication to memorize:

Translation: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil, every harmful creature and every evil eye.

Transliteration is useful for beginners, but learning to read Arabic gradually is better for preserving the correct pronunciation of supplications.

The general meaning of this dua is a request for protection from Allah. The believer recognizes that only Allah truly protects against the evil eye, jealousy, invisible harm and the difficulties that may affect a person.

In English, you may also say:

O Allah, protect me, my family, my children, my health and my possessions from the evil eye, jealousy and every visible or hidden harm.

It is permissible to ask Allah for protection in English. However, learning the supplications in Arabic helps preserve the reported formulas and better understand their meaning.

Dua against the evil eye and jealousy

The evil eye is often connected to envy or jealousy. To ask Allah for protection from these harms, one may recite:

Transliteration: Allahumma-hfazni min kulli ‘aynin wa hasadin wa sharr.

Translation: O Allah, protect me from every evil eye, every jealousy and every harm.

This supplication may be recited for oneself, one’s children, one’s family or someone one wishes to protect.

Ma sha Allah, la quwwata illa billah

  • Surah Al-Fatiha;
  • Ayat al-Kursi;
  • Surah Al-Ikhlas;
  • Surah Al-Falaq;

How to protect yourself from the evil eye in Islam

Protection against the evil eye is based on several simple means:

  • reciting the morning and evening adhkar;
  • reading the Quran regularly;
  • reciting Ayat al-Kursi;
  • reciting the last three surahs of the Quran;
  • saying Allahumma barik when admiring something;
  • avoiding unnecessary exposure of one’s blessings;
  • placing one’s trust in Allah;
  • avoiding jealousy toward others.

The believer must also protect their own heart. They should not envy the blessings granted to others, but should ask Allah to bless them and grant them what is good.

When should you recite a dua against the evil eye?

It is recommended to recite protection supplications:

  • in the morning;
  • in the evening;
  • before sleeping;
  • to protect one’s children;
  • when feeling concern about the evil eye;
  • after being exposed to excessive admiration;
  • when asking Allah to protect one’s family or possessions.

Consistency is important. A Muslim should not wait until harm is suspected before seeking protection.

Mistakes to avoid regarding the evil eye

Certain mistakes should be avoided when speaking about the evil eye:

  • fearing the evil eye more than fearing Allah;
  • attributing every problem to the evil eye without evidence;
  • abandoning authentic supplications;
  • using talismans, amulets or forbidden practices;
  • accusing people without proof;
  • forgetting that all protection comes only from Allah.

Islam teaches balance: recognizing the reality of the evil eye while seeking protection in a healthy way, in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah, without falling into obsession.
