October 3, 2020 – Al-Dirassa Institute

Arabic illustration about possessive pronouns

In this Arabic grammar lesson, we will study Arabic possessive pronouns. This topic is essential for students who want to learn Arabic online, build simple Arabic sentences and understand the relationship between a person and what they own.

In Arabic, possessive pronouns are usually expressed through attached pronouns, called الضَّمَائِرُ الْمُتَّصِلَةُ. They are placed at the end of a noun to show possession or connection.

What Are Arabic Possessive Pronouns?

A possessive pronoun is used to show possession. In English, we say: my book, your pen, his bag, her notebook or our religion.

In Arabic, this idea is usually expressed by adding a suffix directly to the end of the noun. For example:

  • كِتَابِي: my book
  • كِتَابُكَ: your book, for a male
  • كِتَابُكِ: your book, for a female
  • كِتَابُهُ: his book
  • كِتَابُهَا: her book

This rule is very important for Arabic for beginners, Arabic reading, Arabic grammar, Modern Standard Arabic and Quranic Arabic.

Detached and Attached Pronouns in Arabic

In Arabic, there are two main types of pronouns:

  • الضَّمَائِرُ الْمُنْفَصِلَةُ: detached pronouns;
  • الضَّمَائِرُ الْمُتَّصِلَةُ: attached pronouns.

Detached pronouns can be used independently, such as أَنَا, which means “I”, or هُوَ, which means “he”.

Attached pronouns cannot be used alone. They are added to the end of another word. When they are attached to a noun, they usually express possession.

نَا دِينُنَا Our religion

Examples with Arabic Possessive Pronouns

Here are some simple examples to understand how Arabic possessive pronouns are used:

  • هَـٰذَا كِتَابُكَ: this is your book, for a male.
  • هَـٰذَا قَلَمُكِ: this is your pen, for a female.
  • هَـٰذِهِ حَقِيبَتُهُ: this is his bag.
